I'm Marty Mellway, a landscape, wildlife, and conservation photographer based on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada.

Ive had hundreds of opportunites to photograph black bears. After many years I finally got a photo that I felt really captured the black bear. This beautiful bear was eating dandelion by the road side in late spring, hence the dandelion seeds on his head.

My favourite days on the west coast are the dark stormy days of winter. In this photo, an ancient stand of old-growth trees clings to a rugged rocky island. I took this photograph from about 100 meters up in the air out over the pacific ocean off the west coast of Vancouver Island in BC Canada. In January when this photo was taken the colours of the ocean are spectacular. During the winter months, the water is clear and the different shades of blue and green are vibrant on an overcast day.

The power of the ocean during the winter months is a truly humbling force to witness. Giant waves pound the rocky shoreline and relentless wind whistles through the ancient trees.

I often capture photos like these during breaks in the rain because its almost constantly raining during the winter months.

I always struggle with what to write on posts, I'm not really a writer. I don't really have anything to "say" with words. I'm a visual artist. I share something visual and people either get it or they don't. We don't really need any more information. I just want people to look at an image and feel something, feel inspired by the beauty of nature and realize that its our shared responsibility to help protect it. I learn visually, I understand visually.

Nature is beautiful, let's protect it. That really should be the description on everything I post.

Key Monastery is an ancient monastery in the Spiti Valley, a high-altitude desert valley cut off from rainfall and the outside world by soaring mountains and treacherous roads in the state of Himachel Pradesh, North India.

I stayed here overnight while trekking through from Kibber to Kaza. Tea and meals with the monks was so much fun.

We were called to meals and tea by the
sound of a conch shell horn. One of the younger monks showed us many of the sacred inner rooms of the monastery which housed thousand year old scriptures and Thangkas (Tibetan paintings) which had been brought over from Tibet over the last thousand years. Some rooms were so sacred that outsiders were not even allowed to look in, which I really like because it leaves some mystery, which there ought to be in a thousand year old temple deep in the Himalayas The monks take their meals in an ancient kitchen, along one wall there are big stone wood fire stoves. On top of the stoves, huge blackened metal pots 3 feet across and two feet deep are used to cook for the 300 monks that stay at Key. A few of them had been learning English and loved having someone to teach them. Having already been an English teacher many times in the past I felt right at home.

My time at key monastery was definitely an unforgettable experience. I think someday I will return and spend some more time there. I can only hope it doesn't change too much.
